After 300 UMKC students petitioned for a vote to secure funding for the Debate and Mock Trial teams, the Student Government Association (SGA) voted the petition null and void. SGA president Sean McClain and president pro tempore LaDonna McCullough voiced concerns about the legitimacy of the petition.
With the battle over the hyphen settled, the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) appeared to have obtained almost everything it asked for. For all written communications (print and electronic) relating to recruitment, fundraising, athletics and similar public relations functions, the Columbia campus can now call itself simply the University of Missouri.
Those passing through Royall Hall, the University Center or the Hospital Hill campus may have noticed T-shirts displayed, hanging along clotheslines. It wasn't laundry day, but rather an event of global prominence. The displays were part of the UMKC's Women's Center's promotion of the Clothesline Project, an initiative to air society's "dirty laundry" in a form that once was "women's work.
The UMKC Faculty senate approved a Sense of the Senate resolution in support of four legislative priorities to be presented to the Missouri General Assembly in its next session. They include a 4.2 percent core appropriations increase, a health care initiative that would bring $11 million to UMKC, funding to complete the Health Sciences Building and a $3.
An entrepreneurial spirit was in the air during a recent small business workshop. The course, called "Starting a Small Business: The First Steps," covered various aspects essential to being a successful entrepreneur. The program was put on by the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
The university is going high-tech with a new notification program, UMKC Alert!. The University of Missouri (UM) System chose National Notification Network (3N) as the mass notification provider. The 3N system allows for alerts to be sent to most text and voice communication devices.
UM Board of Curators elects new chair Curator Cheryl Walker of St. Louis will become the new chair of the University of Missouri Board of Curators, effective Jan. 1, 2008. She currently serves as Vice Chair, a position that will be taken over by Curator Bo Fraser of Columbia.

Nov. 16 9:38 p.m. Burglary - Officers responded to a report of a prowler in a student residence in the 5300 block of Rockhill Road.
