'Doubt' confuses

How can we form a judgment based on something that can't be known? "Doubt, A Parable" uses this question to address recent sexual abuse scandals that have plagued the Catholic Church. The show runs until Nov. 11 at Spencer Theatre in the Performing Arts Center.

Poet reflects on truth, the Bible and sports during reading

Scholar, translator and poet Willis Barnstone left his glasses in his hotel room. But all was not lost, as UMKC associate professor of English, Dr. Michelle Boisseau, rambled down the aisle with a pair of reading glasses. Without skipping a beat, Barnstone proceeded to kick off the 25th year of the Midwest Poets Series with a flurry of light-hearted euphemisms, intrepid biblical translations and a small portion of his more reflective works.

Girls are starving to live as eating disorders grow

Ninety percent of women think they are overweight, according to Courtney Martin, author of "Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters." On Oct. 25, Martin gave a presentation on the growing issue of eating disorders and skewed body images. "How did this become normal?" Martin asked the audience of mostly women who attended the seminar.

Lots of kids (and lots of adults pretending to be kids) showed up for games, magic shows, balloon art and juggling at this year's fifth annual Community Halloween Party, Sunday, Oct. 28th in Pierson Auditorium. "Every year we organize a Halloween party as part of our traditional events," organizer Laura Medina said.
