Affirmative action talk grows heated

UMKC professor recognized for progressive research

Complications during pregnancy or childbirth kill hundreds of thousands of women each year. Dr. Richard Derman of the UMKC School of Medicine spearheaded an international study that could greatly reduce birth-related deaths worldwide. For his research, Derman received the Award for International Academic Leadership during the 23rd Annual International Relations Council Awards Banquet.

Those who grade sometimes get graded themselves. The Missouri legislature passed an omnibus education bill (SB389) in the spring. Faculty Senate Chair Dr. Gary Ebersole said many in the University of Missouri System "held their noses" while supporting the bill as, besides the good things it contained, there were also many unfunded mandates.

Gangs of Kansas City

Anyone who tells you there are no gangs in Kansas City is dead wrong, according to Calvin Neal. "If you talked to local law enforcement several years back, they would've told you that these gangs didn't exist," he said. "But then, we got to seeing all this graffiti around schools … and people began to accept that there are some gangs.

Kansas City Marathon a first for UMKC student

If you had trouble driving through Kansas City on Saturday, it was because more than 5,000 people were hitting the pavement for the Kansas City Marathon. The race started at Crown Center and finished in the Freight House District around 22nd and Baltimore streets.

Oct. 12 2:38 p.m. Larceny - Officers responded to a report of a missing iPod Nano, shuffle and pink iPod case from the lost and found cabinet in the University Center. The incident occurred between 12 p.m. Oct. 8 and 2:15 p.m. Oct. 12. 9:38 p.m. Drug Offense - During a traffic stop in the 5700 block of Rockhill Road, UMKC officers arrested a person for possession of illegal drugs.
