Huge retention problem for A&S

The enrollment numbers in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) do not look good, and the professors attending the A&S Faculty Council meeting Sept. 11 wanted to know why. A&S Associate Dean Tom Sandreczki, chemistry, presented graphs showing a drop of 621 students in the last four years.

UM combats hacking

The University of Missouri (UM) system is beefing up its computer security in response to a computer security breach in May. UMKC is taking measures to enhance security by following UM guidelines as well as developing some of its own. "We're going through system by system and removing social security numbers where they're not needed," said Justin Malyn, UMKC Information Services System Security Analyst.

Labor studies professor in limbo

For most of her life, Judy Ancel has been an advocate for workers' rights, including 18 years as director of the Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) at UMKC. Despite years of service and community outreach, Ancel's status at UMKC is now uncertain. ILS was earmarked as one of the first casualties of the University of Missouri (UM) System Board of Curators' mandated budget cuts of one percent a year for the next three years.

UMKC offers study abroad options

Many of those looking to continue their educations among a change of scenery attended the Study Abroad Fair, organized and hosted by the Center for International Academic Programs (CIAP). The fair was held Sept. 12 in Pierson Auditorium. Among those on hand were several participants of international programs, which not only send students abroad but bring them stateside as well.

Students who have had a life-changing event and did not perform adequately in their undergraduate enrollment at UMKC for one or multiple semesters now have a second chance through the Academic Amnesty policy.

CSSA helps new international students

The Chinese Student and Scholars Association (CSSA) is getting ready for a new year of helping international students acclimate to life in Kansas City. "When new students come to the university they need someone to pick them up from the airport and help them with temporary living," said Lei Liang, internal coordinator and webmaster for CSSA.

Sept. 7 9:13 a.m. Illness - A student reported having trouble breathing and was transported from 4825 Troost Ave. to the hospital by MAST ambulance for treatment. 9:13 p.m. Suspicious person - Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person threatening a university staff member.
