Faculty complains, math chair resigns

UMKC Mathematics and Statistics Department Chair Kamel Rekab is stepping down as the head of the department. On Jan. 4, seven of the 10 mathematics department faculty members sent a letter of "no confidence" to College of Arts & Sciences Dean Karen Vorst.

Einstein Bros. temporarily closed for 'training,' equipment removal

Executives from Einstein Bros. Corporation closed the Einstein Bros. managed by Sodexho in UMKC's Royall Hall last Tuesday morning. Employees removed equipment from the location in the morning and early afternoon. Sodexho sold coffee, cookies and fruit cups for the rest of the week from a table set up outside the dining area.

Med students man the bases for youth club

Student and faculty volunteers from the UMKC School of Medicine conducted sports physicals for kids at the John Thornberry Boys & Girls Club last Saturday. The unseasonably cold weather didn't deter the almost 100 UMKC students from participating in this annual event.

Astronaut Sally Ride wows girls with science

Dr. Sally Ride thrilled more than 600 middle-school girls from all over Kansas City with tales of floating weightless in space. At the Sally Ride Science Festival, hosted by UMKC in the Swinney Recreation Center last Saturday, enthusiasm was rampant among the children darting from one table to another, looking at the many ways science can be fun.

University News files police report in Einstein Bros. incident

While reporting on the Einstein Bros. closing, University News employees filed a police report April 10 in response to threatening comments made by Sodexho employees while pictures of the facility were being taken. Sports editor Dan Stroud initially reported hearing derogatory remarks from a prep cook, who claimed to have warned management about the cleanliness of the area in Royall Hall.

Health Sciences Bookstore grand opening draws crowd

Despite last Wednesday's blustery weather, Peter Eisentrager, assistant director of the University Bookstore, was outside grilling hot dogs - more than 400 hot dogs, to be exact. The grand opening of the new Health Sciences Bookstore brought more than 100 students to Charlotte Street on Hospital Hill.

A&S advising prepares for Pathway, combats long waits

The College of Arts & Sciences (A&S) advising office is getting ready to help students sign up for summer and fall classes under the new Pathway system. "Pathway is better," Director of Academic Advising Becky Bergman said. "It will be positive for students, but non-traditional students might not like it.

Students stand up for Darfur

STAND, an anti-genocide coalition of UMKC students, presented a "Save Darfur" panel discussion recently. STAND was founded in August 2006 to raise awareness about the crisis in Darfur. "We are a community organization committed to ending the genocide in Darfur, as well as raising funds for AIDS awareness and educational materials for Sudanese youth," said Jennifer Hardin, president and founder of the UMKC chapter of STAND.

Event educates about rape, violence

A woman is raped every two minutes in the United States, according to FBI statistics. April is sexual assault awareness month. UMKC held its forth annual "Take Back the Night" event called "Kristin's Story" on April 15. This year, the Women's Center collaborated with Rockhurst University for the event, which was held on Rockhurst's campus.
