UMKC freshman guard and 2007 Mid-Continent Newcomer of the Year Chazny Morris scored a career-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds. Unfortunately, the effort was not enough to give the Kangaroos an opening-round victory in the Mid-Continent Conference tournament quarterfinals against Oral Roberts University.
The UMKC women needed someone to step up and make a big-time play against the Westerwinds of Western Illinois University last Monday night. It came in the form of UMKC sophomore Tobey Beer, whose huge three-pointer with 12 seconds left in regulation tied the contest at 56-56 and sent the game into overtime.
In 2005, former University of Missouri-Kansas City women's Head Basketball Coach Bo Overton literally came knocking on Interim Associate Head Coach Ron Anderson's door asking him to be part of his coaching staff. Prior to accepting the position on Overton's staff, Anderson first had to make sure the move would be OK with his 14-year-old son Cody.
Led by junior high-jumper Courtney Huber, who successfully defended her title from her 2006 triumph, the UMKC indoor track-and-field squad recorded 11 top-four finishes at the Mid-Continent Conference Championships in Evansville, Ill., Feb. 25-26. Oral Roberts University chalked up the most points for the women's squads with 198.
Men's Tennis The UMKC men's tennis team was blanked 4-0 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Kangaroos trip to 1-3 on the season. In singles action, Patrick Smith, UMKC freshman, fell to Brett Rodgers, 6-4, 6-3, and the Kangaroo's Dennis Schwarz, freshman, was bested by Mike Youn, 6-1, 6-3.
UMKC senior Ashley Toft hit two home runs Sunday afternoon in St. Louis. The Kangaroos dropped the first game to the Saint Louis University Bilikens, 5-4. In the second contest, senior Cori Mead pitched a complete game shutout over Southeast Missouri State University, 6-0.
