Student union project building up

UMKC plans to build a new $40 million student union by 2010. The funding would come from student fees and needs to be approved in a campus-wide referendum by the student body. Located west of Miller Nichols Library and south of the Fine Arts Building, it would house many student services currently spread around campus.

PeopleSoft integration closer to completion

Updates for the new computer system PeopleSoft were showcased at last Monday's town-hall meeting. Full integration of the system should be completed by this summer. "Campuses are changing and students are changing," said Doug Swink, associate registrar and PeopleSoft project leader.

Floyd a no-show at Kansas City Unity Tour event

The 2007 Unity Tour rolled into Kansas City Wednesday morning offering a panel discussion between UMKC chancellor Guy Bailey, Metropolitan Community College Chancellor Jackie Snyder and Steve Lehmkule, senior vice president for Academic Affairs for the University of Missouri System.

Professor examines reading problems among children

When it comes to reading material, Dr. William Labov, professor of linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, believes, "Nice is not interesting." Labov tries to bring more realistic and intriguing elements to the stories he writes. His stories are specifically designed for children who are learning to read, especially in African-American communities.

Diversity Week is full of cultural events

The third annual diversity week, "Diversity Week 2007: Uncaged," kicks off at 2 p.m. today in the Quad. An enormous "Cage of Oppression," representing different forms of discrimination, will be displayed all week. The last day of the event is Sunday, Feb.
