While the campus was "celebrating UMKC" last week, some students living in Cherry Street Residence Hall were getting sick. Students had to carry their belongings to other rooms in Cherry or across the street to the Oak Street Residence Hall due to mold problems in their dormitory rooms.
Urban Cross Dancers entertain at annual Hispanic festival - Friday night at the University Playhouse, music and feet were jumping at the Third Annual Festival de Culturas. Urban Cross dancers Eboni Brenson and Joel White were on hand to provide students with interactive dancing to the evening's music.
Faculty Senate Chair Gary Ebersole, College of Arts and Sciences (A&S), opened last Tuesday's meeting in the Administrative Center by announcing that the Nov. 7 meeting will be held at the Hospital Hill campus. "I recommend carpooling or taking the bus," said Ebersole, noting that parking is difficult near the School of Medicine.
The UMKC School of Nursing received a major federal grant that will place it at the center of attention nationally. The Nursing School will receive $2.725 million over the next four years from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to develop a clinician training program.
Kansas City's Country Club Plaza is the first place in the globe to feature a new public art exhibit. English artist Mackenzie Thorpe's five 15-foot-high sculptures were unveiled in a ceremony last Saturday on the Plaza. Thorpe uses hearts in his artwork to convey a message of love and happiness.
Recently, many University of Missouri System schools have instated a fee for students with lab classes. UMKC is considering instating this fee as well. The fee will not raise the cost of all credit hours, but would be a supplemental fee for courses that require additional supplies and money.
Pellom McDaniels, a future assistant professor of history at University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), spoke at the Gem Theater on Oct. 4 about black athletes at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. At the same event, Larry Moffi, writer and poet, spoke about two Jewish athletes, Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller.
The Discovery Center's Nature Conservation started its afternoon on Monday, Oct. 2, with a stakeholders meeting informing the community of Kansas City's newest development: Tulips on Troost. Tulips on Troost was created to beautify the street by planting thousands of flowers along its sidewalks and vacant lots.
Campus Programs awarded $1.45 million Three programs at UMKC received a total of $1.45 million from the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation's 2007 Leadership Grants. The money will go toward the School of Education and the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration.
Sept. 29 5:30 p.m. Larceny - A person not associated with the university in the School of Education building reported a wallet, credit cards, drivers license, and debit cards missing. The incident occurred between 7 and 9 p.m. on Sept. 27. 6:02 p.m. Pursuit - UMKC police officers pursued a vehicle in the Kansas City Health Department parking lot that had a felony stop order.
