Twin Oaks' slated demolition is quickly approaching, and the feelings of resident students are, for the most part, neutral. The deadline to be evacuated from the structure is May 31, although many have opted to leave early. Although the move will be an inconvenience for residents, one student is capitalizing on his forced evacuation.
Dr. Bryan Le Beau is still researching UMKC's options for administering undergraduate programs on campus. In lieu of teaching during the winter semester of 2006, Le Beau has instead been working at this project in the Provost's office. Le Beau began his work during the fall semester of 2005, and as of March 31 declared that he was about halfway done with his research.
The UMKC Conservatory of Music, dubbed "the jewel in UMKC's crown," celebrated its centennial anniversary with a Grand Finale Weekend, featuring music and dance performances from students, faculty and alumni. At Saturday night's grand finale concert, many local celebrities wished the Conservatory a happy 100th birthday, including Mayor Kay Barnes, Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver, and Chiefs quarterback Trent Green.
UMKC Chancellor Guy Bailey sent a campus-wide e-mail last week to announce the appointment of Dr. Bruce Bubacz as the new provost for Academic Affairs. Bubacz had served as interim provost since August 2005. His goals include recruiting minority faculty, focusing on academic programs and creating new revenue sources.
Investigations into claims made against UMKC's Kappa Psi have not been completed. Recently, two female UMKC pharmacy students, Nicole Stinner and Sara Andrade, filed charges against the co-ed organization, alleging a hazing incident. The two students say they were assigned the nicknames "Sorest Rump" and "Position Impossible.
In the past, UMKC's graduation ceremonies consisted of nine separate events at Swinney Recreation Center and spanned three days. This year, students were asked what they wanted, and they said music and a short ceremony. In response, the University has organized a unified commencement ceremony for Saturday, May 6 at Theis Park.
Roo Party wins election by one vote One vote gave the entire Student Government Association (SGA) executive board to the Roo Party. Students voted last week in the 2006 executive officer elections to put all four members of the Roo Party ("We'll Lower Your Tuition") into office.
Not much happened as the senate met last Wednesday for its last regularly scheduled Student Government Association (SGA) meeting. The senate was to review and approve Superior Court nominees but tabled the discussion until a possible special meeting this week.
The Muslim Student Association (MSA) recently celebrated Islamic Awareness Week. Many students endured the scorching heat to enjoy food and listen to Dr. Vern Barnett's speech. Dr. Barnett believes that Islam has affected everyone in one way or another.

Campus University budget to be finalized Next year's University of Missouri budget is in its final stages of approval. The Missouri State Senate approved the budget April 19. Now it will be considered by the House and Senate Conference Committee, which will begin deliberations this week.
