Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle opened UMKC's 2005 RFK Symposium last Monday, stating as the keynote speaker that he believes stem cell research can support moral and religious values while giving hope to the sick. Daschle followed the theme of the weeklong Symposium, "Bio Ethics and Stem Cell Research," in discussing policy implications of the research.
Students got administrator's attention Thursday afternoon as they blocked traffic on Rockhill Road before agreeing to abandon the protest to meet with administrators. Seven Kansas City police officers and four UMKC police officers directed traffic away from Rockhill Road onto 50th and 51st Street for 25 minutes, as about 30 student protestors circled the crosswalk just east of the University Center.
Catherine Kironde knows what it's like to be the new kid in town. "I was an international student working two jobs, and I wasn't involved my first year at UMKC. It was miserable," said Kironde, who came to Kansas City from Kenya to study. Kironde is now very involved in the campus.
