New process would change student groups' funding

Students will have sole responsibility in appropriating nearly $900,000 in student activity fees if the Student Government Association (SGA) Senate OKs the creation of an entirely new allocation committee next week. "The new system will make [asking for funds] a lot easier," said SGA President Geoff Gerling.

Campaign season in full swing

Several shots were fired last week as candidates for the Student Government Association (SGA) elections hit the campaign trail. The elections, April 18-20, feature four four-person tickets vying for the executive-level positions of the SGA. Three debates are scheduled before the election, so students will have an opportunity to hear the positions of all four tickets (see related story, 'Numerous debates inform students about candidates').

Talent showcase highlights diversity

Singers, comedians, artists, poets and even a sword act highlighted the Diversity Talent Showcase last Tuesday, March 29 in Pierson Auditorium. From 3-5 p.m., 18 amateurs competed for cash prizes in front of an audience of about 100. A similar talent show created by School of Dentistry clinical instructor John Cottrell was the model for the showcase.

MAX will connect University to city

University students and faculty seeking urban adventure next fall may want to put the keys away and leave the driving to MAX. In July, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority [KCATA] will open their new Metro Area Express [MAX]. A bus rapid transit system, MAX will link the University with the Plaza, Westport and Kansas City's resurgent downtown.

Beach balls, foam swimming noodles and inflatable toys added to the April Fool's Day fun at the event, which ran from 7-9 p.m. "We are promoting family togetherness," Deborah Foster of Alpha Sigma Lambda said.

March 24 At 7:05 p.m., UMKC Police were dispatched to Twin Oaks North for a student injury. The reporting party told officers he found a female student lying outside the building, bleeding from her head. She had refused help from him and left before he could call campus police.

Correction

Due to an editor's error, a correction in last week's issue reported the wrong dates of the Tent State University protest. The event will take place from April 11-15.
