Debate team continues reign

For the past 17 years, the UMKC debate team has ranked as one of the top 10 in the nation. As the seven current squad members break into the new season, it looks like the 2004-2005 school year will be no exception. The team's triumphs on the road this summer held high the standard set by UMKC debaters that came before them.

SGA resolutions stir controversy

Members of the UMKC faculty, third-floor administrators, the Student Government Association (SGA), and The University News are taking positions in response to resolutions passed by the SGA two weeks ago. SGA President Geoff Gerling has signed three of the four resolutions and vetoed resolution number three that recommends cutting the U-News' budget by $15,000.

Privacy notice raises larger issues with faculty

Though the misconstrued privacy waiver that alarmed faculty members starting up their computers had been removed, it continued to be an issue at the faculty senate meeting last Tuesday in the Administrative Center. Provost Bill Osborne was present to field questions and admitted the notice that stated "users (authorized or unauthorized) have no explicit or implicit expectation of privacy" was not as "user friendly" as it could have been.

Group funding cut for all except SGA

Recently released minutes from the Vice Chancellor's Advisory Committee (VCAC) have raised questions concerning conflicts of interest and methodology used in appropriating funds. In question are the positions held by Student Government Association (SGA) President Geoff Gerling and Executive Vice President Tom Kernan, who simultaneously hold chairs on the SGA and the VCAC, giving them power to influence what funds are allocated to their own organization.

Chemical spill injures student during class

A student was not seriously injured by spilling sulfuric acid while conducting an experiment at the Spencer Chemistry Building on Thursday night. According to Sgt. Don Simmons with UMKC police, the accident occurred while an unidentified female student was working with another classmate.

Fall enrollment shows University most diverse in UM system

The fall 2004 University enrollment statistics show UMKC is the most diverse campus in the University of Missouri (UM) System. Enrollment numbers have also steadily increased since the fall 1998 semester. According to an official University report, the total headcount of students enrolled this semester stands at 14,260.

Catalog goes digital

Say goodbye to the stacks of schedules that pile up each new semester. Technology has ended the age of the paper booklets on campus. Starting Oct. 15, the UMKC catalogue and schedule of classes will be all online. The transitional process, a decision that has been the topic of conversation between Registration and Records and faculty for well over a year, will complete that day and traditional paper catalogues will be done away with entirely.

University supports Stowers expansion, stem cell research

University scientists at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research (SIMR) work daily to unlock the secrets of life and the human body. Their ranks will grow over the next 10 years, should SIMR proceed with its plans for a $250 million, 600,000-square-foot expansion of their facilities in Kansas City.

Graham crusade wraps up Billy Graham wrapped up a four-day crusade Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium, the first time Graham has visited Kansas City since 1978. While attendance figures were not available by press time, crowds of over 40,000 people filled the stadium Friday and Saturday nights.
