Roos vs. Golden Grizzlies

With two conference matches last weekend, the Roos broke even. Oakland University (OU) took on the Roos Saturday night, just one week after falling to UMKC 2-3.

This time the outcome was different. The Roos lost in three sets - 19-25, 23-25 and 13-25.

In the first set the Roos started strong, earning seven of the first eight points.

But the Golden Grizzlies started to climb the scoreboard, coming within a point of the Roos at 11-12 and 13-14. The Golden Grizzlies then managed to take a lead of 17-14.

Freshman middle hitter Christiana McQuin's kill and service ace brought the Roos back within a point (17-18), but OU continued to top the scoreboard and won 25-19.

"The first half of that first game is how we can play," Head Coach Geno Frugoli said. "And, that's the way we play when we beat big teams."

The Golden Grizzlies' entered the second set with confidence, but the game was still tied at 8-8.

After the Grizzlies surged, the Roos recovered to 14-15, but then Golden Grizzlies shot up again by three points. Still, the Roos did not back off, and back-to-back kills by freshmen outside hitters Elizabeth Beck and Kate Humphreys tied the game 19-19.

OU pushed the points to a 23-21 lead, the Roos tied the score 23-23, but the Golden Grizzlies hammered a kill to the court and, with a Roo error, the game ended 25-23.

In the third set the Golden Grizzlies continued their success, taking a 16-8 lead. With only five points needed for OU to take the set and win the match, the Golden Grizzlies were up by nine (20-11). Seven points later the game ended in OU's favor, 25-13.

"We started out strong, but they made better adjustments then we did," Frugoli said. "We got frustrated when things weren't going our way and it just compounded. This was one of those matches when nothing went right. You just have to let it go and move forward. We have to learn a lesson from that and come back and fix mistakes in those situations."
