The Chancellor's Campus Lunch on Volker Campus brought together students, faculty and staff for a moment of repose at the end of the week.
The interim chancellor himself, Leo Morton, donned an apron and passed out cookies.
"I'm here to serve," said Morton. "And here is a way that can certainly be appreciated."
Morton has been with UMKC on the Trustees Board since 2000, and recently stepped down to fill the position as the university's interim chancellor.
Morton was not alone in his service. The food line was covered by many more staff and administrators.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Mel Tyler served burgers, while nearby, Arts and Sciences Associate Dean Tom Sandreczki worked up a sweat taking care of the ice.
On a busy campus with a large commuter population, some students said they appreciated the opportunity to spend a little time together.
On her way to lunch, student Nkem Okolo saw the crowd and stopped to "join [her] fellow students for the catering."
Friday's lunch was mirrored by a similar lunch on Thursday at the Hospital Hill campus, and the administration's efforts to connect with the students did not go unnoticed.
"I certainly feel blessed that he's part of this community," said Okolo of the interim chancellor's service.
Morton maintained his purpose for the lunch was to stay in touch with everyone on campus.
"We have a lot of great faculty, and this way we can connect with the students and show our appreciation," he said.
