Public Lecture: "African-American Language Identities: Contradictions and Conundrums": by Sonja L. Lanehart, the Brackenridge Endowed Chair of Literature and Humanities at the University of Texas-San Antonio. She is the author of "Sista, Speak! Black Women Kinfolk Talk about Language and Literacy" (2002) and editor of Sociocultural and Historical Contexts of African American English (2001). 111 Royall Hall, 7 p.m.
Gendered Health Disparities: Professor Maithe Enriquez will focus on the poor health outcomes African-American and Hispanic women face due to the unequal treatment associated with racial and ethnic disparities in health care. African American History and Culture House, 5245 Rockhill Road, 7 p.m.

Poetry Reading: 2007 UMKC Cockefair Chair Writer-in-Residence Eleanor Wilner: Wilner, a poet, civil rights activist and professor, will read, followed by a reception and book signing. Wilner has published six books of poetry, most recently "The Girl with Bees in Her Hair" (2004) and "Reversing the Spell: New and Selected Poems" (1998); and a translation of Euripides' Medea in Euripides I. Lecture: "Indian Women and the Conquest of Latin America": by Viviana Grieco, Ph.D. This lecture discusses the role of Indian women before and after the conquest, explores women's participation in economic, religious and social organizations, and highlights the role of Indian women in the construction of gender roles in early colonial Spanish American society. Documentary: "Kamp Katrina: a Film about New Orleans": Filmmaker David Redmon presents Ms. Pearl, a New Orleans native who converts her backyard into a tent city where 14 displaced people live for six months. She provides construction jobs and basic resources to help them assist in rebuilding the city. The situation gradually goes awry violently, and she is confronted with an array of abuses in a broken city. 119 School of Education, noon to 1:30 p.m.
