Morton's vision for UMKC - the 'Decision Theater'

Abstract:
UMKC Provost Gail Hackett presented a new high-tech initiative to the Faculty Senate at its meeting on Aug. 18. It is called the "Decision Theater."

I think most members of the UMKC community have a crazy idea that UMKC should devote their resources toward their primary mission of educating students. While UMKC students continue to struggle with a debt load and costs now higher than Columbia/MU students face, what does our genius new chancellor come up with to help them? He goes and finds a buddy who sits on his company's board of directors to pay for a project that has little real world relevance. I mean, has Morton even heard of Google Maps? And how many architecture and design students does UMKC have compared with the student body as a whole?

UMKC students, get out while you still can and remember projects like this when UMKC comes asking for your hard earned money after you graduate. Your money won't go to the students or faculty, it will just go to some buddy of the Trustees who only sets a foot on this campus to make additional business deals.

Special gifts can catalyze both interest and previously untapped community support. This campus is unique in the dedication of a growing number of faculty and schools to programs that benefit the city and region through education, architecture, urban planning and design, policy and professional programs.

Thank you, Interim Chancellor Morton, for offering this intriguing suggestion. With the help of the Trustees and the community, your suggestion could connect us in many ways.

How about scaling back UMKC's top-heavy/exorbitantly costly administrative structure and focusing on academic improvements?
