The majority of those who voted in favor of traditional marriage do not hate gays. It is unfair to say that they do.

Standing up for what you belief is right does not equal hatred. Nor does permissiveness equal love.

Society is being asked to say that homosexual relationships are equivalent to heterosexual relationships. They are not equivalent. Even if the protestors succeed in changing some of these laws, the truth is that the two types of relationships will never be equivalent.

"Those who voted against interracial marriage are not racists. They're just standing up for what they believe in."

That's not quite so. I don't think you would find many who would disagree that prohibiting marriage on the basis of the race of the two seeking to marry is racial discrimination. Nor would you argue that denying all men (or women) who sought a driver's license based on gender would be gender discrimination.

How, then, are we not dealing with gender discrimination here? We are talking of a government service (a license) being denied based on the gender of the participants. Denial of interracial marriage would be no less racist to say "Well you can get married if you're both black, or both white, just not any combination." It is no less discriminatory to say there must be a combination, that the two cannot be the same gender.

Sexual orientation need not even enter the field here. Gender discrimination is already prohibited by federal and state laws, and denying services based on the gender of two people is no less discriminatory than denying services on the basis of one person's gender.

What is the basis for your opinion - besides religion?

"Society is being asked to say that homosexual relationships are equivalent to heterosexual relationships."

That DOES equal hate.

CMA,

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Do you mean that the gay activists demanding a redefinition of marriage equals hate? Or the fact that the people must decide if they are equivalent equals hate?

I'm going to assume because you use the term "hate" that it is the latter. It's easy enough to say that it equals hate, but you haven't said why.

As a parent, sometimes I have to stop my child from doing certain things because it will hurt him or others. Does that mean that I hate my child because I do not allow him to do everything he wants to?

Obviously this is not a parent/child relationship, but society as a whole must decide what types of behaviors it encourages and what behaviors it discourages. Homosexual behavior does not offer any benefits to society, so the society can choose not to encourage that type of behavior. Heterosexual behavior is beneficial to society, especially when the couple is in a stable, monogomous relationship. So the society encourages stable relationships by allowing them to marry, and making it difficult (somewhat) to divorce.

It isn't about hate or discrimination. It is about what behaviors are best for society.

Preventing someone from their constitutional rights... hmm, I'm going with hate!

Ryan,
Why do you think it is a constitutional right? Where is it written. You need to be able to support your argument. And just because you say it is hate, doesn't mean it is. I can't think of anyone that I hate. What makes you think that you know better than I do whether I hate people?

"...So the society encourages stable relationships by allowing them to marry, and making it difficult (somewhat) to divorce...."

You just thwarted your own argument. Based on what you just said above, that is EVERY reason to allow homosexuals to marry. It promotes stable relationships!

Also - Many who take anti-gay positions are angered by the perceived "thwarting" of their freedom of religion and freedom of speech that these protests generate, CONSISTENTLY argue the constitution guarantees them Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness....for Liberty and Justice FOR ALL.....These individuals fail to see this argument means JUST THAT....for ALL....not just SOME....not just "the ALL" of your choosing.

IF you take religion out of this argument and simply look upon it constitutionally, ANYONE can see that civil rights are meant FOR ALL!!!....Gay, Straight, Black, White, Asian, etc.....

We are ALL EQUAL under GOD'S EYES....

Think about these things before you stand on them for your arguments against gay marriage. Your arguments hold no water.
