Holiday hopes for extra cash are dwindling for some as the search for a part-time job becomes harder this year.

Unlike in years past, most retail stores are not clamoring at the same rate for seasonal help.

To make matters worse, the demand for lower-level retail jobs increases as the unemployment rate goes up.

Treasures archived for discovery: Kansas City Jazz

Imagine more than 30 of arguably the greatest jazz musicians of all time coming together on one record with one goal.

That goal is to capture the essence of Kansas City Jazz.

Unbelievably, such a record exists.

Stored away for posterity in the Marr Sound Archives is a record called Kansas City Jazz, a recording of a group of dance compositions played in Kansas City style by the men and women who originated and popularized the style.

"I suggested it to another band I was in and they said no," Tomasino said. "So I wrote a song called that (Everyday/Everynight). Then I heard this music that Evan (Ashby) wrote and I was like, 'That's Everyday/Everynight - that's beautiful.

There's an obvious old Bright Eyes influence to their overall sound, but not an imitation (especially in "New Skin"), and also in the lyrics and subject matter.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, most people enjoy a good meal in the company of family.

But times are tough, and it may be hard for the family to put that bird on the table, much less fly you back home to eat it.

Many students will be stuck in their dorms, apartments or rental houses this year with no clue as to how to prepare a Thanksgiving feast, let alone have the funds to do it.

"2012," directed by Roland Emmerich, is a classic example of this theory.

Last Saturday, after at least four different versions and seemingly endless closed-door negotiations, the House of Representatives finally unveiled the product of its collective genius.

H.R. 3962 is a 2,000 page healthcare "reform" monstrosity. For some perspective, Tolstoy's epic "War and Peace" is only about 1,500 pages, Ayn Rand's classic "Atlas Shrugged" is a tidy 1,000 and most versions of the King James Bible run half the length of this bill.
