Operatic Scenes: The Light and Dark of Opera: Conservatory students present student-directed scenes from various operas. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in James C. Olson Performing Art Center, Room 116.

TUESDAY, APRIL 21

Test Anxiety Seminar: With finals coming up, who couldn't use a little help with nerves? Get some advice with this success seminar at 11 a.m. in Oak Street Residence Hall classroom.

UMKC Graduate Fellowship String Quartet: The program includes music by F.J. Haydn, Prokefiev and Dvorák. The free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in White Recital Hall.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22

Celebrate Earth Day: Help create habitats for Missouri wildlife by planting a native Missouri tree. A variety of species will be handed out free at the UMKC Bookstore.

Clean Commute at UMKC Film Series: The UMKC bicycle loan and repair program continues its bicycle-related film series with "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." Film begins at 7 p.m. at The Hub. Enjoy Earth Day and watch the movie on the lawn!

THURSDAY, APRIL 23

Breaking the Silence: A Community's Response to Domestic Violence: UMKC Women's Center sponsors this conference on Domestic Violence through a variety of topics. Conference runs from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Pierson Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students; $20 for professionals.

UMKC 2009 Denim Day: The UMKC and Kansas City communities are invited to break the dress code and the silence to dispel harmful attitudes about rape. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear jeans and attend the kickoff ceremony to show their support to end sexual assault. Kick-off is at 12 p.m. at the University Playhouse.

Don Quixote Public Reading: April 23 is "Book Day" in Spain, which commemorates the anniversary of Miguel Cervantes' death in 1616. Celebrate by participating in a public reading of his greatest work, "Don Quixote," in English or Spanish. Bring your copy and prepare to read/perform your favorite selection, or just enjoy others' readings. Reading begins at 4 p.m. at the University Playhouse.

From Meltdown to Bailouts: What's Next?: UMKC Economics professors will discuss the current economic crisis and prospects for recovery including the government stimulus plan, bailout packages and new regulatory initiatives. Free and open to the public. Symposium begins at 7:30 p.m. in Royall Hall, room 104.

FRIDAY, APRIL 24

Conservatory Connections: Chinoiserie: Acclaimed Conservatory faculty members Chen Yi, Zhou Long and their students perform at the Chinese Temple with selections inspired by the Nelson-Atkins' collection. Free performance at 6 p.m., with repeat concerts at 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Atkins Large Chinese Gallery.

The Master and Margarita: Check out the UMKC Theatre Department's biggest work to date. "The Master and Margarita" begins in previews this weekend, opens next Wednesday and runs through May 3. Call UMKC Central Ticket Office at (816) 235-6222 for ticket info.

Darwin Goes to the Movies: Linda Hall Library continues their series on Darwin, featuring a free double-feature screening. Films include the documentary "Alfred Russel Wallace: One in a Generation" and "Trog." Screenings begin at 1 p.m. in the Linda Hall Library Auditorium.

Vaughan Williams' Dona nobis pacem: The Signature Series presents its finale with the 100-piece Conservatory Orchestra and 100+ singers of the combined Conservatory Choirs performing this Ralph Vaughan Williams masterpiece. A Tribute to Kansas City History, As Told Through Walt Bodine: The Walt Bodine Show, featuring the Kansas City radio icon, will broadcast live from the Kansas City Public Library Plaza Branch. Discussion will include recently rediscovered interviews conducted by Bodine with notable figures such as Robert F. Kennedy, Werner von Braun and more. Broadcast begins at 10 a.m.
