Conservatory: The Conservatory of Music and Dance presents Master Class: Karrie Pierson, renowned bassoon player. Performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at Grant Hall, room 122. No tickets required.
First Monday at the Movies: Linda Hall Library is sponsoring a free screening of "October Sky," a movie based on NASA scientist Homer Hickam's memoirs. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Cooper. The screening will be from 6-8 p.m. at the Linda Hall Library Auditorium.
Conservatory: UMKC Fellowship String Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. at White Recital Hall in the James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry St. Event is free to all.
Tuesday, Dec. 8
Academic Success Workshop, Preparing for Finals: UMKC Coaching Program is sponsoring a free workshop to offer tips to students preparing for finals. Workshop will be held from 12-1 p.m. at the Oak Street Residence Hall Classroom. David Archuleta: "American Idol" finalist David Archuleta will perform at 7 p.m. at the Midland Theatre by AMC, located at 12th and Main streets.
Late Night Breakfast: APC is sponsoring a breakfast from 10 p.m. to midnight in the University Center Cafeteria for those up late studying for their finals.
Wednesday, Dec. 9
Pre-Med Society Final Meeting: Final meeting for the Pre-Med Society will be held at 5 p.m. at the Plaza Room in the Administration Building.
The Midland: 106.5 The Wolf is sponsoring "Acoustic Christmas" at 8 p.m. at the Midland Theatre by AMC. The show features Jason Michael Carroll, Jimmy Wayne, Chris Young and Love and Theft. Tickets are free and available through the radio station.
Thursday, Dec. 10
Staff Council: John Aust sponsors the monthly service projects committee meeting to promote, discuss and support various service-related projects. The meeting is open to all staff and will take place at 3 p.m. in the Swinney Recreation Center conference room.
Conservatory: The Conservatory of Music and Dance is sponsoring a performance by the UMKC Conservatory Wind Symphony beginning at 7:30 p.m. at White Recital Hall. The performance is free to all UMKC staff, faculty and students.
Kiss: The band will stop in Kansas City for their Alive/35 world tour to celebrate their 35th anniversary. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Sprint Center (14th Street and Grand Avenue).
Friday, Dec. 11
Holiday Fair & Luncheon: Staff Council is holding their 4th annual holiday fair and luncheon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Administrative Center in the conference rooms. The fair includes a clothing drive, a luncheon and a raffle. Twisted Christmas: 98.9 The Rock and the Midland Theatre by AMC presents Twisted Christmas, featuring Breaking Benjamin and Papa Roach.
The Artistic Interpretation: An artistic interpretation of Radiohead's music will be performed at 9 p.m. at the Record Bar in Westport.
Saturday, Dec. 12
Whoville Holidays: Whoville Holidays will host a variety of Who-activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at City Market. You can get your picture taken with the Grinch and help a Who in need by donating canned goods to Harvesters. The event will also host a Cindy Lou Who look-alike contest and lots of Whoville activities and projects.
The Toy and Miniature Museum: The museum is now featuring the exhibit "Celebrating 50 Fabulous Years with America's Favorite Doll." Celebrate Barbie's 50th Birthday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Student tickets are $6.
KC Rep: "A Christmas Story, The Musical" will be on stage at Spencer Theatre from 8-10 p.m., forgoing the usual pick for the season.
Sunday, Dec. 13
Good Samaritan Project: The Good Samaritan Project is hosting a Holiday Homes Tour through the Scarritt Rennasaince neighborhood. The tour begins at Melrose United Methodist Church (200 N. Bales); the tour includes carriage rides, carolers and a concert by the KC Boys and Girls Club. Cost is $40, $78 per couple. Proceeds will benefit people living with HIV and AIDS. The tour begins at 3 p.m. and the concert at 7:15 p.m.
Bartender's Breakfast: Have a late Saturday night? Come shake it off at the Record Bar with their afternoon Bartender's Breakfast. Breakfast starts at noon.
Christmas in the Park: Looking for some holiday cheer? Drive through the annual "Christmas in the Park" holiday lights display at Longview Lake. More than 300,000 lights create a spectacular winter wonderland. The park is open from 5:30-10 p.m. and entry is free. Donations are accepted. kkates@unews.com
